Our Syrah is planted on steeply terraced hillsides, reminiscent of its
home in Cote-Rotie. The Sierra Foothills are widely recognized as an
ideal home for Rhone varietals. Our terraces face North and East which
lengthen the growing year for this early ripening grape.
We train the Syrah to a quadrilateral cordon with Geneva Double Curtain
(GDC) trellising. GDC forces shoot growth down, thereby reducing vine
vigor and keeping the crop load balanced. Our Syrah, planted in 1994, is a
combination of the Syrah clone from Tablas Creek and the UC Davis Clone, and
both clones have small oblong berries.
